Flying from the US through Amsterdam to Vienna, you will go through immigration (passport control) in Amsterdam (your entry into the Schengen Zone). If your flight from the US to Vienna is all on one ticket, your bags should be tagged for VIE. You will not see your luggage until Vienna, when you will go through customs. However, customs in Europe is usually just a matter of walking through the "Green Channel - Nothing To De-clare" door. On your return (assuming you are taking the same route), your flight from Vienna to Amsterdam is similar to a domestic flight in the US (no passport or customs). You will go through passport control in Amsterdam (leaving the Schengen Zone). At your first US airport (regardless of your final destination), you will go through immigration, then pick up all your checked luggage, then go through customs (not a walk-through in the US). If you are taking a connecting flight, you will deposit your checked bags at the luggage recheck (usually just outside customs), then go through security to get to your next flight. Here's a video of how the connection process works in Amsterdam: http://tinyurl.com/d8xlclk
