I am trying to book an online reservation for an overnight train on Trenitalia.com. I will be purchasing separately a Global Pass. I get as far as choosing the train but the form asks for a "Tariff... Card Number" in the upper right hand corner. Is it asking for a Global Pass number, credit card number?

While you can use a North American credit card to buy tickets and/or reservations when you're in Italy, you can't do so online. The Trenitalia site will reject them. If the night train is the only one for which you need to buy a reservation well in advance, do it through Rail Europe. It's more expensive than doing it in Europe, but you won't have to worry about the night train being sold out before you get to Italy.
