Trenitalia: How to choose a different connecting train?

At trenitalia.com, is it possible to choose a different train for a connecting trip? For example, if you want to spend a few hours in a city before moving on. Or, do you need to buy two separate tickets?

Generally, Trenitalia charges per train leg. So just buy separate tickets. They're not like German trains where you can build in stopovers. On the good side, Italian full fare prices are lower than German full fare tickets

Need two separate tickets but tickets are priced pretty close to distance so two separate tickets should not be substantially different from one ticket.

An afterthought - if using a Regionale train those tickets are good for six hours so you could on and off so long as you complete the journey in six hours.
