Tren Italia website challenges

Hello everyone, thank you so much for the help! I have tried multiple times on the TrenItalia website to book a roundtrip ticket from Rome to Napoli, departing Sept. 3 and returning Sept. 5. I have a login and password for the site, and I am able to select both the outbound and return trains and rates I'd like. I fill in our names, click to accept the terms and conditions, then click to pay with either a credit or debit card (I've also clicked on the PayPal option just to see if that's the problem) and once I hit "continue" - which I think should take me to a page to enter my credit card information, the screen kicks me out and says "Error code : 998 The transaction has not been completed. No charge made." Any ideas? I know someone's buying tickets, maybe not online, because some of the economy rates for my travel date are now sold out. Thank you!

I just wanted to post that I found a solution for this: I logged out. When I booked the tickets as an unregistered user, the website accepted my credit card. So all is well. I hope it helps someone else!!

Tara, There are frequent complaints here from people that have had trouble with the Trenitalia website. If you have any further problems, there's an excellent tutorial on the www.roninrome.com website that goes through the online ticket purchase process step-by-step. Although it's a bit more expensive, I just prefer to buy tickets when in Italy, either from the staffed ticket office (if there's no queue) or from the Kiosks. Happy travels!

I had the identical experience yesterday. No problem buying tickets as a nonregistered user, after several failed tries while registered.

Hi Tara, I had the same problem with my reservation attempts on TrenItalia website. I switched browsers ( I think I went from Chrome to IE or could have been the other way round) and then the reservation went through. Also make sure you have alerted your credit card company or they might reject the charge (as mine did). Good luck. Rakesh
