Will be driving in July to Sorrento from Cinque Terre and would like to visit tuscany area on our way..only have two days to spare though -leaving from La Spezia (CT )on Thursday and need to be in Sorrento on that Saturday. Would love to visit the Monte Oliveto Maggiore Abbey on our way and experience the Tuscan area...could stay overnight somewhere...any suggestions or recommendations....thanks

It'a about a 2 1/2 hour drive to Asciano, the town near the abbey, from La Spezia. You could easily do that Thursday (but I believe they close down at Noon for 2 or 3 hours, so be sure to leave La Spezia early!), then continue on. I would suggest Orvieto, a great place to spend 2 nights. Orvieto is only about an hour from Asciano. HIghly recommend B&B Ripamedici, overlooking the countryside from Orvieto. Only about a 10 minute walk from the Duomo, free parking in the garage also a short walk away. Very quiet place, too. You can easily spend a full day just in Orvieto seeing the town, or you can drive a bit in the countryside, even to Assisi if desired. Sorrento is about 4 hours from Orvieto.
