travelling through Germany in June 2014 after a 15 day cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest. My wife and I will then travel to Leipzig before attempting the following intinerary. I would like some feedback and any tips that might help please. To avoid the Hotel charges in Munich, which I believe our overpriced, I plan to travel by train to Hohenschwangau, stay 3 nights.Included in that stay will be a day visit Munich. Leaving Hohenschwangau travel to either Zurich or Lucerne ,stay overnight and then join the Golden Pass Rail to Interlaken (Jongfrau trip ?)before returning to Zurich and then flying home to Australia. We have plenty of days for travel. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You
Yes, hotels in Munich, as in any other big city, are a bit pricey. But I'm not sure you will find Hohenschwangau that much less expensive. As an alternative, you might want to stay here, in Oberammergau. This place is near the bus stop/train station and reasonably priced. An RVO Tagesticket, for 9,50€/person will cover your round trip from Oberammergau to Hohenschwangau. The owner, Frau Richter, speaks good English and can explain how to make the trip. You can also go RT by train (change in Murnau) to Munich using a Bayern-Ticket for 26€. Another alternative for the castles, although not as convenient to Munich, would be here, in Pfronten.
Lee, I looked at Oberammergau but it seems by the Google Map to be far away from Hohenschwangau. The train goes to Fussen and it is only a short Bus ride from there...only about 10 minutes. The hotel charges seem quite good.
Thanks for your support.
You can use the German Rail (Bahn) website to find schedules for trains, as well as scheduled buses. Frau Richter can help you with the schedule. In 2007, I stayed at Gaestehaus Richter and left in the morning for Wieskirche, from where I went north to Landsberg. There were two Americans on the bus with me who had stay at Richter and were going on to the castles for the day. But, if you find a place in Füssen, with prices with which you are comfortable, go for it.
Lee there is accommodation in Hohenschwangau and I have booked into Schlossrestaurant Neuschwanstein for 2 nights total cost 170 Euro. On the "Tripadvisor" website the ratings are quite good.Anyway we have since changed direction a little. From Budapest we will now travel on Railjet to Munich/Hohenschwangau, stay there for 2 nights and then rail to Lucerne for 3 or 4 days.
Thinking of going to Interlaken and do Jungfrau or Stilthom by cable car etc.,Also Mt Rigi in Lucerne and then the William Tell Express to Lugano. From there who knows what direction we will take but will need to think about heading home to Australia.
