travelling in western/central europe

I'm travelling with my wife and 3 year daughter on budget. I have 8 days and two itineraries: a) Lisbon -> Madrid -> Barcelona -> Paris -> Zurich b) Lisbon -> (overnite train) Geneva -> Paris -> Barcelona ->Madrid -> Lisbon a) How feasible are (a) and (b)? b) Is it cheaper to buy eurail pass or travel by point-to-point tickets?
3) Are there comfortable and cheap overnight trains (we wont mind 2nd class) for the long distances and how much is the fare?

You want to see 4 (four) countries in 8 (eight) days????? This is waaaay too ambitious and not recommended. Even if you were travelling just by yourself. With a small child that can be a recipe for disaster - and I have travelled with small children in Europe. Pick two destinations that are your top priority, if possible with easy connection. If Paris is you top choice you could easily spend the entire time there and just add a couple of day trips into the countryside.

Well they apparently live in Poetugal and are starting there to visit 4 cities in 3 countries. That is still a bit much for 8 days. I'd skip Geneva.

ok, if ritesh lives in Lisbon then I don't quite understand the first itinerary without a return to Lisbon. I still think that with 8 days it makes more sense to select 2 destinations max. Especially if you are travelling with a small child and especially if you are on a budget.

Ditto everyone else. You are trying to see too many places that are far apart in too short a time, and are trying to do this with a 3 year old. Not a good idea. With only 8 days, pick one or two places, and actually have a good time. First pick the places, then worry about the transit, the train passes, etc. If the transit is not feasible, you can pick other places. In other words, don't go to a place just because a train stops there. For most itineraries these days, point-to-point tickets bought ahead of time on the national train operator's website are almost always cheaper than a Eurail pass. You can also take a budget flight (especially appealing from Lisbon with only 8 days, as a train ride from there to anywhere outside of Spain will involve days, not hours). Search this forum for the controversies about overnight trains. Some people love them, but many hate them and say "never again." Remember that many adults don't sleep well on them. If your 3 year old doesn't get a good night's sleep, NO ONE will be happy. I've never been to Switzerland, but I keep reading (and not just from Rick Steves) that Zurich and Geneva are two of the least worthwhile places in that very expensive country. If you're going to spend the time and money involved in seeing Switzerland, focus on the places that people enjoy, like Lucerne and the Berner Oberland. So, let's start over. Where do you really want to go (top 3 choices)? Then, people can help you plan the details.

If you do live in Portugal, I see no problem with most of travel plan A. A few changes, though. Day 1-train to Madrid Day 2-see Madrid Day 3-train to Barcelona Day 4-see Barcelona -Day 5-train to Paris (or even cheap intra-Europe plane-Easy Jet, Condor, Ryan Air, etc.) Day 6,7-see Paris Day 8-plane back to Lisbon (again, airfare can often times be cheaper than a train, depending on when you're travelling) You'll have to skip CH unless you want to really push it. If so, catch a flight from Lisbon to Zurich or Geneva, visit Paris, then Barcelona, Madrid, and home to Lisbon.
For help with the travel details, visit a local travel company who can help you. There's super cheap fares for the summer offered by many of the train companies.
