I am travelling in Italy the last week of April and I am wondering if I should reserve my train rides at home or book when I arrive at each train station in Italy?
It's so easy to get tickets at the station. A day ahead is more than sufficient - buy the next day's trip when you arrive. The automated machines take credit cards (look for the ones that specify that) and save your money since this is a cheaper option. If you have a long leg, say Venice to Rome on the ICE, a reservation might be handy, but again I wouldn't expect a big crowd in April. Avoid the regionale trains!!!
thanks so much!
Buying tickets at the station is quite easy. Especially at the ticket machines. The machines will prompt you in English and will accept your credit card. Where seat reservations are required, the machine will make them for you. Really quite easy. The best hint is to be a bit organinzed with your travel dates and times and purchase 1-2 days in advance of travel. Most trains do not run full. For the occasional one that may run full, switch to 1st class or take the next train.
I often buy tickets in Italy from travel agents. Rarely are their any lines to deal with and the cost has always been the same as at the station.
