Hi planning to visit Europe next year june for 2 months. Wld that be enough time to do justice to say abt 8 countries. may not want to do eastern europe. even if it on a budget any idea as to how much shd i be prepared for in USD. am absolutely clueless so any info will be appreciated.
Somehow, get a copy of "Europe Through the Back Door" by Rick Steves. It will answer many of your questions and then some. You can even order it from this website. Go to the top of thee page and click on the "Books" tabe.
We visited 8 countries in 8 weeks. It is doable, however, you need to spend a lot of time doing the logistics and be very organized. Know your itinerary before you purchase your Rail Passes.
We visited: Holland, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria and Luxembourg(1 day).
We stayed the mojority of the time in hostels and had very nice experiences. That greatly reduced the cost of lodging.
We bought the majority of our food from grocery stores and delis.
We did not spend over $100 USD or 75 Euros per day average on food and lodging. Many days it would be more like 50 euros or less.
Of course we paid for our airline tickets and Eurail Passes before the trip.
Traveling inexpensively can be done. I believe I read everything online that Rick Steves' has posted on his website during my planning.
It cost more per day for our traveling around the US this summer for 30 days than it did for our 8 weeks in Europe due to the cost of hotels/motels and gas.
We will try to limit our trip to Portugal, Spain, Italy and possibly Switzerland in 2010 to 5 weeks as we found 8 weeks was too long. We were wore out when we got home.
I would advise you to print the train timetables for your travel days prior to leaving home. We found it to be a lifesaver for us.
Enjoy!
