Rome to Madrid is way too far to consider as a train trip. The DB website ( https://www.bahn.com/en/view/index.shtml ) recons 24 hours for the quickest connection:

Roma Termini dep 20:00, FR 9660, Milano Centrale arr 22:55
Milano Centrale dep 23:13, EN 200, Dijon Ville arr 06:43
Dijon Ville dep 08:34, TGV 6839, Montpellier Saint-Roch arr 11:46
Montpellier Saint-Roch dep 13:40, TGV 9713, Barcelona Sants arr 16:34
Barcelona Sants dep 17:00, AVE 3172, Madrid-Puerta de Atocha arr 19:45

CONCLUSION: A lot quicker to fly.

Rome to any other part of Italy, yes, we've all done that many times. Look up times, prices and buy tickets on the Trenitalia (Italian National Railways) website: http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en

I would not take trains unless you have destinations you want to visit in France, preferably for at least two nights each, since days in between are likely to be long travel days.

Train will also be more expensive than flying, even if you book three months ahead to get the best discounts. Rick’s Train Travel Time & cost Map gives you an overview of faster train travel times in hours, as well as regular (full-price) 2nd-class fares.

Thanks everyone for your help. It is very long and it could be cheaper and quicker by plane. This is my first trip to Europe , certainly will be the first of many.

Good for one-way flights on Europe's budget airlines, although the traditional carriers are included too. On no-frills flights it is wise to check for additional charges beyond the opening price; the "frills" can add up.
