I am a new bag packer going to europe in may. Kindly tell the cheapest mode of tranportation from paris to Nice. Can it be combined with local metro passes of paris?

Bus is cheapest, but for a few euros more you can have the high-speed TGV which brings you there in less than 6 hours.

Local Metro passes are only for city travel - you can't use them for long distance. You can get much cheaper long-distance rail fares if you book around three months in advance online, but these are limited to specific trains chosen at the time of booking. The rail journey from Paris to Nice still takes quite a long time as you use the traditional railway line from Marseille to Nice with several stops - also look into cheap air fares from Paris to Nice.

When comparing train and plane, add at least 3, if not 4 hours to the flying time for getting to and from airport, check-in and luggage belt. Trains go from city centre to city centre.

On both short-hop planes and inter-city trains, buy as soon as possible to save money. The fast trains can cost more than double when bought near the departure date. In France, a seat reservation is built into the train ticket. All about trains at www.seat61.com; one-way budget flights at www.skyscanner.com

Another issue: On inter-continental itineraries, it may be possible to fly into one city, home from another. It saves the time and cost of retracing your steps to your arrival city. But you most use a multi-destination search function; these are not two one-way flights.

We flew Air France as it was cheaper than taking the train for our dates so check all fares.

Get your train tickets as soon as they go on sale for your dates and train will be the least expensive and most convenient way to go.

From Paris to Nice one way, the price range in second class can start from 30 or 40 euros on a limited number of seats, which are the first to sell out, and there are intermediate prices, and full fare is over 100 euros per person. If your date is not yet for sale, you can request email notification through a test search at https://en.oui.sncf/en/. Flight prices are often around 50 euros, again with advance booking; see www.skyscanner.com.
