Travelling between Venice and Basel, Switzerland

Does anybody know the best way (and most economical if possible) to get from Venice, Italy to Basel, Switzerland? I've looked at several trains but the times are not convenient as we would be arriving at 12AM. Does anybody know any other viable options?

The train journey take between 7.5 to 8 hours depending on which connections you take. There are no direct flight between Basel and Venice. To Geneva there are direct flights via baboo.com, to Zurich there are direct flights via airberlin.com and of course Air Swiss/Alitalia

There are of course connecting flights out the Venice to Basel airport. Check out http://www.kayak.com/ for your options.

Thanks Michael. I've also been looking into trains from Mestre and also night trains. Apparently if I take the shuttle to Mestre I can get an earlier train to Basel. They don't give you the fares online though. How would I find this out?

You're welcome. There's a direct train at 7am from Mestre to Basel, journey time for this train is just 7 hours. According to the Swiss Rail site (http://rail.ch) The standard fare is 165USD. Typically if you book in advance there are special non-refundable/non-changeable fares that can cut that price in half. Next year's schedules/fares won't be posted until around Dec. 15 So you should wait a bit to purchase your ticket and get the discount rate.
