Travelling between Montpellier and Venice

I am trying to get from Montpellier to Venice by either airplane/train or a combination of the two. While less expensive is always better, I am having a hard time trying to figure out a route. Flying looks complicated and rail travel, too. Best idea I have so far is the train to Paris from Montpellier and then Easyjet to Venice. But this will involve an overnight in Paris on the way back that I was hoping to avoid (have already been in Paris this trip). Any great ideas? And thanks - I appreciate the help!
