Traveling Venice to Munich in a day

We are trying to find a cheap & quick way to travel from Venice to Munich in a day. We arrive in Venice on May 17 (9:00am) and need to be flying out of Munich on May 18 (1:00pm). What options do we have? We are carrying two suitecases that would fit in a overhead compartment. So far we found a night train, which takes 8-9 hours (Is train safe?). However, we prefer traveling day time if possible. We searched for flights, but could not find any direct flight... Also, if we get to Munich by the end of May 17, any recommendation of hotel by Munich Airport?

There used to be a direct day train from Venice to Munich. However, since the schedule change this month, I no longer see it.

There is a regional train leaving Venice S.L. at 11:03, with a change in Verona (12:42-13:05), getting into Munich Hbf at 18:25. The train from Verona to Munich is a Eurocity, EC 84. These are very nice trains. With advance purchase on the German Rail website, you can get Europa Spezial Italien fares as low as €39 per person.

With a 1:00 departure from MUC, you can stay almost anywhere in Munich. I have a favorite hotel outside Munich, but, unfortunately, they only speak German. If you want an inexpensive hotel near the main station, you might try Hotel Royal.

There is also an EC leaving from Verona at 15:05, getting into Munich at 20:25, for which you can get the same Europa-Spezial fare.

Walter,

The train option suggested by Lee would an excellent choice! Travelling that route in the daytime is a good plan as the trip through the Brenner Pass is beautiful (at least IMHO). The train usually stops at the border for a few minutes to change locomotives.

For a Hotel in Munich, you might have a look at This Hotel. It's an easy walk to the Munich Hbf (about 10-12 minutes once you know the way). I'd suggest taking a Taxi from the Hbf to the Hotel when you arrive in Munich. Writing down the address in a piece of paper would be a good idea, as not all the Taxi drivers speak English.

For the trip to the airport, the S-Bahn would be the best option. The trip is very easy (about 30 minutes as I recall) and no issues with traffic. You might stop for a few minutes when you arrive in Munich and buy your tickets for the S-Bahn trip the following day. Both the S-1 and S-8 go to the airport, but I believe one of them "splits" and goes to a different destination (hopefully Lee or one of the others can clarify that).

Happy travels!

In my experience, not all taxi drivers even speak German.

Other than some private bus companies, the S-Bahn is about the only option to the airport. It takes about 40 minutes depending on which direction and where you start. The S1 goes west around town to the airport; the S8 goes to the east. You can catch either from the S-Bahn trunk like that goes through town from the Laim to Leuchtenbergring, stopping at the Hauptbahnhof and Marienplatz. If taking the S1, be careful to sit in the back part of the train. The forward cars break off at Neufahrn and go to Freising.

If you buy a Gesamtnetz Partner Tageskarte (for €18,80), it will cover both (2-5 P) of you for all of your transportation that day (U-/S-Bahn, trams, & buses) in the entire MVV zone, which includes to the airport.
