Has anyone traveled to Turkey who can give me some tips about getting around in that country. We will be flying in to Istanbul, but would like to travel to Ankara and Bodrum..Need some advice on what is our best method of getting to those destinations.
Flying into Istanbul gives you many options. Go to www.tripadvisor.com, type in Istanbul forum, and ask there. All manner of experts including expats and residents of Istanbul will guide you to the best ways to travel, eat, shop, and a host of other activities.
fly from Istanbul to ankara and ankara to bodrum if you can - the bus time is very long. once you get on the coast you can work your way around with big buses. there are many bus companies about equal, so you can pick any one you want. i used the big red bus operated by a company called pamukkale a lot and it was pretty good on all the trips i took with them.
We went in 2009 and flew Turkish Airlines from Istanbul to the Cappadocia area. It was cheap, very easy and their airlines were very nice!
Overnight train from Istanbul to Ankara is also an option to consider. Did that on a Best of Turkey tour, and it was a pleasant and efficient way to travel.
