Traveling throughout Europe on separate dates/months?

Hi,

I'm planning to study abroad at the University of Leeds, UK in spring 2010. I'll be there from Jan-Jun and would like to take long weekends to travel around UK (London, Bath, etc.) What are some cost-effective ways to do this?

Also, I may take a lengthy trip to continental Europe (2 weeks or so) during my spring break. Should I plan to fly from city to city or book a EuroRail pass? I am considering Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Madrid, Athens, Rome, Florence, Copenhagen, and maybe some others (open to suggestions!).

Getting a EuroRail pass seems really expensive, since I don't know when I'll be traveling within a 2 month period, but maybe more convenient?

I think you'll find that you can take the train or even bus for your weekend trips in the UK. Point-to-point can be affordable if you just book them ahead of time. Think about adding Edinburgh and Glasgow to your list as well as York. There are cheap flights from city to city, but be sure you calculate your travel time to the airport and the wait time. If you only have a little over two weeks for the continent, then you have too many cities and they are too spread out. Europe is a bigger place than you think. I would recommend ranking the places you want to visit. If you have your heart set on Greece, then you might want to fly to Greece and then look into going on to Rome and Florence.

When I was a student in Europe we really worked the night trains to extend our weekends. We were fortunate that we didn't have class on Friday. We would take a night train to a city on a Thursday night and then take another one home on Sunday. That's the good part about being young. You've tons of energy. ; ) I hope you have a wonderful trip. Pam

Www.whichbudget.com will show you what budget airlines fly from where to where. For travel times of over five hours or so, it's probably better to fly than to take the train.
