Traveling Rome to Boston on Air Lingus Customs Questions

Hello, we are returning to The US Boston from Rome and we are traveling from Rome to Boston on Air Lingus early next week through Dublin with a 2 1/2 hour layover.
I am confused and cannot seem to get any information on how the US Customs works in Dublin
I am checking bags directly from Rome to Boston and we will have two small carry-on bags.
How does it work when we get to Dublin, do my checked bags go directly through to Boston, and do we go through customs with only our carry-on bags?

When we flew Air Lingus over to Rome last week our checked bags went directly to Rome and we only went through Italy customs with our carry-on bags?

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Lou LaBella

You don't have to collect your bags to go through customs at Pre-Clearance. The agent used to pop a picture of your bag onto a monitor, but I didn't have that in 2018 or 2019. (Maybe because I had Global Entry by then?)

But you DO have to go through another security screening before getting to the actual customs line.

So you'll get off the plane from Rome, make your way towards pre-clearance with your carry-on luggage, go through security (just like entering an airport, so dump any liquids over 3oz, like a water you got for your first flight.), then through immigration, then to the gate area before boarding your flight to Boston. When you get off the plane in BOS it'll be just like you'd flown in from Chicago—make your way straight to baggage claim and walk out of the airport.
