Traveling next weekend

We will be flying out next Sunday to Germany. I'm starting to get train info: price estimates, etc We will be flying into Stuttgart and taking the train to Ehrwald, Austria. Can anyone tell me if there is an ICE train from Stuttgart to Garmisch or is it just from Stuttgart to Munich?

Thanks!!

Hi,

From Stuttgart to Munich you have choices as to which train to take, depending upon the departure time. There is the ICE Stuttgart to Munich Hbf with Munich as the terminus. as well the RailJet, the EC (EuroCity) and the IC (InterCity)

Garmisch Partenkirchen only has little trains. Nothing fast goes on those little lines.

Thanks for confirming that for me. So should we buy an ICE ticket just to Munich and then buy tickets to Garmisch once we reach Munich? I ask this because there is only a 9 minute window to change trains in Munich and I know we are going to need more time that that!

You buy tickets for wherever you want to go A to B, or in this case Stuttgart Flughafen/Messe (the station at the airport) to Ehrwald. This will include all the trains you need to go on. You do not need to buy separate tickets for each train.
As you are flying in, you cannot predict when you will exit the airport (flight may be late, immigration delays), so just buy tickets at the station when you get there, and accept you won't be getting the cheapest price.

If you miss a train connection due to your incoming train being late, just catch the next train. Reservations are optional on ICE trains, and do not exist on regional trains.

You can look up train times on the DB (German Railways) website. Just look up "Stuttgart Flughafen/Messe" to "Ehrwald". It will take ~5 hours: https://www.bahn.com/en/view/index.shtml
You can also see prices on this website.

Not sure why you are mentioning Garmisch if you want to go to Ehrwald.

Thank you Chris.
I just wasn't sure if we bought our point A to B tickets at the airport and missed our connection in Munich if the ticket would still be good for the next train. (Complete newbie....first international trip and never taken a train, even in the US). I only mentioned Garmisch instead of Ehrwald because I believe we will have to change trains in Garmisch to get to Ehrwald anyhow, this much of the trip I figured out. LOL
We aren't buying out tickets ahead of time. I'm just a planner and trying to get things organized for the least bit of hassle.

Thanks for everyone's help.
