September we will be traveling by train from Ljubljana to Rijeka, picking up a car and driving to Rovinj. Our train gets in about 5:55 and sunset is 6:30. What are the roads like. Are we better to stay in Rijeka and head out in the am or do you think it is an easy enough drive at night.

Roads are good. Two lane mostly. Beautiful drive. The best scenery was just out or Rijeka its mountains straight to the sea, but that part was a bit windy. Personally, I would just go to rovinj. An evening in rovinj so 1 million times better than one in Rijeka. I guess it really just depend on your comfort level with driving in the dark.
