I will be travelling to Vienna and wanted to know what is the best way to get to the Neuschwanstein Castle from there and how long will it take. Is there a hotel and airport close by that I could fly into before my river cruise in Vienna? Thanks so much!
If you are visiting Newuscwanstein before your river cruise, by all means tfly from US to München, which are within 2h-3h of Füssen (the city where the castle is). Between Füssen and Wien you can go to by train (6h40 to 7h35 long train trip, make sure to book first class if you take a train that long) or go to München and catch a flight there - which will not save you much time. Füssen has many hotels to choose from, check a website like Booking. Just remember the castle is fake, the product of a lame madman of late 19th Century, not an actual medieval castle (it is as fake as the canals and gondolas of the Venetian casino in Las Vegas, only older).
If you travel to Neuschwanstein via Munich, than you catch a train from Munich to Füssen (departure for instance 8:51, 9:51, 10:51 a.m., the journey takes 2 hours 4 minutes). In front of the train station of Füssen you can catch a bus to Neuschwanstein.
If you are travelling after 9:00 a.m. or on a saturday/sunday, then don´t buy a regular ticket but a "Bayern ticket". In this case your journey München-Füssen will cost 22 Euro, a normal ticket 48 Euro. In any case you have to return to Munich, where you have several trains (also one overnight train) to Vienna. Best wishes
