My wife and I will be travelling in provence and Italy this summer. My question is the best way to get from around Avignon to Cinque Terre as that will be our longest stretch of uninterrupted travel, though if we drive we can always stop along the way. Train, plane or automobile; what do you think?
Stuart: You should be able to get a train from Avignon to Nice and then to Genoa where you can get a local train to any of the Cinqe Terre towns. We went from Paris through Avignon and Marsailles to Nice, stayed in Villefranche-sur-mer, then on to CT. Check the Germain rail site for times and routes.
If you decide to rent a car, be aware that there is a formidable fee for picking up a car in one country and dropping it off in another.
You could take your time driving from Avignon to Nice, drop off your car there, and take the train to the Cinque Terre.
Or you could take the train all the way in one fairly long day.
Or you could take the train to a town of your choice on the Cote d'Azur (Nice or one nearby), spend the night, and continue on to the CT the next day.
However you do it, if you are art lovers you definitely should spend at least one day and night in Nice or close by. Outside of Paris, Nice and the surrounding area have the best art museums in France.
Great advice. We love art. Nice it is. We'll take a train there, spend the night, then on to CT.
Thanks for the help!
