Traveling from Koln to Oberhausen

My friend and I are traveling in Europe in September. We have 3 days that are not completely planned out yet. We wanted to go see a Cirque du Soleil show in Oberhausen, Germany, but we didn't want to spend all three nights there. We are going to Koln and thinking that we could possibly spend the third day at Oberhausen. We tried to look on the internet to see about how many hours it is from Koln to Oberhausen via railway, but had no luck. Does anyone know about how long it takes to get there via railway?

Check with www.bahn.de. There are various connections. Some of them only take 40 minutes but are a bit more expensive, some take 55 minutes and are cheaper. Also note that Cirque du Soleil in Oberhausen play at CentrO, which is a huge (!) American style shopping mall - but with all-European shops. If that's something that could be of interest to you allow some more time for Oberhausen. Also a day trip from Cologne to Düsseldorf is worthwhile! Or visit the baroque old-town of Bonn, where you can see the birth-place of Ludwig van Beethoven.

Go to the Nordrhein-Westfalen local transport website. It's in German, but pretty intuitive. The opening page has fields to input information for schedules. Use "Koeln" and "Oberhausen" where it asks for Ort and "Dom/Hbf (Innenstadt)" and "Oberhausen Hbf (Innenstadt)" for Haltestelle. Make sure you put in the date in European format (dd.mm.yyyy).

The schedule shows hourly direct train connections (RE 5). The one-way fare per person is €13,80, but for two to five people you can buy a Schöner-Tag-Ticket (Länder ticket) for unlimited regional trains and all local transport for all day for €33.
