Traveling from Barcelona to Madrid - what's the best way?

I wanted to know: What's the best way of traveling from Barcelona to Madrid? I'm a college student trying to save money but I also don't want to be on a bus for 11 hours. I've been finding mixed info about which is cheaper: bus or train. Also, I plan on going in July. Should I book tickets online? If so, what would be the best time? And is it cheaper to travel at night or during the day? Can anyone help?! I'd appreciate it! Thanks!

Snigdha, I'd suggest the AVE (fast) train, as the trip is as short as 2H:43M (certainly a lot better than 11-hours on a Bus!!!). Unfortunately, "cheaper" usually means "slower" so you'll have to decide whether your budget will allow travel via fast train. I haven't checked, but I doubt there would be any cost advantage to travel at night. For full details on the prices and any applicable discounts, check This website (especially the Prices & Discounts section). Happy travels!

The standard 2nd class fare for the AVE train is €117.60. However, if you book well in advance, you can get a Web fare as low as €47.10. You also can fly on a budget airline. If you book well in advance, you can get a fare of less than $50 US on either Vueling or Spanair. Take the train. By the time you factor in the time to get to and from the airports and go through security, it will be faster than flying. Sit back and relax, enjoy the scenery out the window, and reduce your carbon footprint.

Take the AVE train! Less hassle, more fun, not as packed in as on the planes there. Also, the planes have very expensive luggage considerations. Purchase AVE 62 1/2 days before your travel and you will most likely save a substantial amount.
