We were surprised to be asked for not only our passports at Customs in MSP but for another form of picture ID and our boarding passes. Usually we throw away boarding passes in flight, so it was a fluke we had them. We've never been asked for additional ID before, either.
The immigration agent needs the boarding pass to see what flight you came off and match it with the customs form. I never gave it a second thought, and I always hang on to boarding passes if I have to fight for my FF miles (which seems to be every flight these days). Second ID? Tell him you don't have any. A passport is the gold standard of "government issued photo ID". Sometimes immigration agents are intentionally rude to see how if you react "suspiciously".
