Traveling by train from Nice, France to Monterosso,Italy. How?

We will be traveling by train from Nice, France to Monterosso, Italy---Cinque Terra- in April. I can not figure out what the exact routing would be. There is no direct train. What station do we change trains? Ventimglia? Genova? San Remo? Has anyone taken this beautiful trip? How did you travel? Any suggestions will be much appreciated. Thank you, Debra

You will have better luck looking for trains from NICE VILLE to LA SPEZIA CENTRALE. Some trains stop in Monterosso and some don't; it is easy to catch a local train from La Spezia to Monterosso. You will most likely change trains in Ventimiglia, and possibly in Genova (Genoa), depending on which train you take. The trip takes about 6 to 6 1/2 hours to La Spezia. I've taken this trip in both directions. It is easy to buy tickets at the train station. If you have a pass, you may have to pay extra for a reservation before getting on the train.

Thank you for your information. I have Rick's book and the European rail timetable-- none of these answered my question as completely as you. I appreciate you sharing your experience. Happy Travels, Debra

For complete timetables go to www.bahn.de. Click on the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner for English. Enter a date no later than 13 December. (New timetables will go into effect on 14 December.) Enter Nice as your departure point and Monterosso as your arrival point. Enter 05:00 as your departure time. After you get summary timetables for Nice-Monterosso, click on "Details for all" to see the connecting points. You'll see that the number of connections varies depending upon the time of departure.
