Are you asking if it is better to take the train or drive? Or what is the question? It is pretty vague!

I'd rent a car in Frankfurt and drive down into the towards Colmar/Strausberg and then drop the car in that area (maybe even on the German side to save $$?) And then take a train into Paris.

I think your kids would enjoy a train ride much more than sitting in a car. Plus, you need car seats in Germany for that age, sort of the booster type, though I imagine car rentals would have them. Riding the train with kids is so easy, plenty of room for them to do stuff if they want, like color or play with lego, etc., bathrooms are available, you can look out the windows at everything and talk about it. I just think it makes for a more pleasant experience for everyone involved. You especially do not want to get caught in a traffic jam sitting in a car in the middle of summer.
