While on my vacation to Europe we will be in rome. From rome we are heading to either vernazza or pisa, then to vernazza or pisa then to vencie. What is the best route to go to first pisa or vernazza from rome. What is the best route to leave to venice to (vernazza or pias) Next what is the best mode of transportation?? bus or does the euro rail go between pisa and vernazza? Thanks. Hope it is not all too confusing
We sort of did the reverse of what you did. We started in Venice: flew there from USA. Then we rented a car and drove all over Tuscany and Umbria. Then, and this may help you, we dropped off the rental car in La Spezia( glad we had a GPS,) and took the train from La Spezia. This was very easy and very cheap, except we had too much luggage. The Italians were very helpful . Many helped us on and off the train. We went directly to Vernazza in the Cinque Terre. Stayed there a week and here we took the train directly toPisa. There are 1 or 2 trains that bypass La Spezia and go directly from Vernazza and Monterossa only to Pisa . This is cheap also. We Stayed in Pisa 2 days and then flew to Rome.Keep in mind the the puddle jumpers from Pisa to Rome or the other way around are usually very late. We spent 4 hours in the Pisa airport waiting for the commuter. Let me know if this is any help at all and email me if you need more info. We stayed in some great places. This was last May. Jane
Most any journey from Rome to Vernazza will take you through Pisa. On some runs, you will change trains there. On others, you just stay on the train and change trains in La Spezia. Very easy. Pisa is about 1.25hrs from Vernazza by train.

I would suggest stopping at Pisa on the way to Vernazza. Nothing there but the leaning tower and some nice adjoining historical grounds. The reason for this suggestion is that on the way to Venice, there is a great 7:52am train departure out of La Spezia for Venice with one train change to a Eurostar in Bologna. This journey saves almost an hour and 1-2 train changes and does not go through Milan or Florence. If you go back to Pisa after Vernazza, you will have to backtrack through Florence.
