Three major options on the table, none of them straightforward: 1) Rent 2 cars, drive yourselves to Chamonix, then get the 2 drivers back to Courmayeur (Italy) to return the cars the following morning, then take a bus back to Chamonix (make sure you buy round-trip tickets for the Mont Blanc tunnel!). It's a 5h (driving time) on an all highway, all tolled route that ends up with the Mont Blanc road tunnel. 2) Fly to Geneve or Lyon and take a train to Chamonix. 3) Take a sequence of 4 or 5 trains + replacement bus, travelling via Switzerland. Travel time around 9 hours.

A couple of thoughts. First, depending on the day you need to fly, www.easyjet.com flys from Venice-Marco Polo to Geneva. I see fares as low as 32.49E. But, they don't fly every day and they fly later in the day. They depart about 16:15 and arrive at 17:30. That's 75 minutes. Here's a link to what I see. http://gyazo.com/95d0388b2ae7d6883b56cdaaba54b470 Yes, you are in Geneva late in the day but now the good news. There is a frequent 8-seat minibus that runs from the Geneva airport to Chamonix. From December to April, there are 30 departures a day. Fare is 29E. Driving time is about 1hr20min on clear highways. Thus, by about 8:00pm you are in Chamonix-Mt. Blanc. Head over to Atmosphere Restaurant and have a great dinner. You can then head for the airport and catch the same minibus to Chamonix. Here's yet another link to what I see. http://gyazo.com/4e7fb5e405f2c27ddea17fe94b07c235 You'll love Chamonix-Mt. Blanc.

Lary, It makes no sense, whatsoever, to take a train to Genève and than claw back by bus to Chamonix! If one is going by train, it is better to take the route via Martigny and cut-off to Chamonix right there! There is a trains line under renovation, so the last 20km or so will be done on a replacement bus. But I repeat: going by train, do not head west to Genève all the way.

Success! I have booked Easy Jet for Rome/Venice and Venice/Geneva for about €75 for both flights with luggage per person. Thanks for the advice. Now any suggestions for Accomodation in Rome, Venice or Geneva?
Thank you from Perth

We liked the Smeraldo in Rome which is about 5 minutes to both Campo de' Fiori and Piazza Navona; and Pensione Guerrato in Venice which is very close (but not too close) to the Rialto Market and Grand Canal very much. They happen to both be in the RS book, and we will return to both very soon. We didn't really care for Geneve and don't have a good suggestion for a hotel there.

Linda, good on you. You've done well. EasyJet is a good airline. Just carefully read the baggage and weight rules on their website. The EU budget airlines make extra money by carefully checking the size and weight of your luggage. We can't wait to get back to Chamonix. It was a favorite place to visit.
