There are frequent trains from Waterloo to Wimbledon, taking 16 minutes. It is a ten or fifteen munite walk to the All England Tennis Club from the station. Sorry, I can't help with the Covent Garden part, as I am not familiar with the various tube lines and stations.

I'll add to Lola's answer. Walk to Leicester Square Underground Station rather than Covent Garden (notice the lack of the first "n" that you spell it with) because they are only about 90 Metres apart underground and you would have to change anyway. Take the southbound Northern Line (Charing Cross Branch) 3 stops to Waterloo and go upstairs and follow Lola's answer.

Most of the restaurants around Covent Garden are pretty much touristy. There are hundreds in the vicinity though so if you share what sort you would like perhaps we could advise. I eat near there in Soho frequently, also in 7 Dials. What do you want to eat?

By Tube from Covent Garden or leicester square; either by Picadilly Line (west) to Earls Court or Northern Line (South) to Embankment; change to District Line (West)- be sure to get train going to Wimbledon as the District Line splits at earls Court Advantage of Tube is that you dont have to wait long between trains

If going to the tennis it is quicker to get off the tube two stops earlier at Southfields rather than at Wimbledon station, and walk from there.

I would have thought that every 3 or 4 minutes from Waterloo to Wimbledon was fairly frequent. And, as Lola said, fast. 16 minutes for the train, 32 minutes all in. The Tube is a valid choice, but does take 3 minutes longer and only goes every 5 minutes. To say you should not take the train because you have to wait a long time is not necessarily so.

Thanks for the helpful responses about travel to Wimbledon. We now know how to get there. As for restaurants, we want to try local/English food, good less touristy pubs, but also like French. We are renting an apartment rather than staying in hotel so we are hoping for local recommendations as to food. Thanks so much.
