My husband and I are traveling to Ravello in mid June with our three children ages (12,10, 8). We will be flying into Rome and then traveling down for five nights and then back up to Rome and off to Venice. We were thinking of renting a car in Rome to drive to Ravello and then back . Our hotel in Ravello has free parking. Is renting a car a good idea? Also, are there alternate routes to get there that are less treacherous ?
Gina, The quickest and easiest method would probably be to travel by train to Salerno and then to Amalfi by SITA Bus and then to Ravello. You could also travel by boat from Naples, Sorrento or other towns on the coast to Amalfi and then by Bus to Ravello. Driving along the Amalfi Coast at that time of year could be somewhat "nerve wracking". Also note that EACH driver will require the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which is used in conjunction with your home license. You'll also have to be very vigilant to avoid the dreaded ZTL (limited traffic) areas which exist in many towns in Italy. Good luck with your planning!
I googled Rome - Ravello and was directed to the Tripadvisor forum. A couple of postings suggested the train to Salerno, and then either get a local driver or taxi to Ravello. Another suggestion was to take a boat from Salerno to Amalfi and then the local bus to Ravello. Maybe your hotel can come up with some suggestions as well. Good luck with whatever you choose - its beautiful there.
You could also take the Freccia train from Rome to Naples (about 1.5 hours or less), go downstairs to the Circumvesuviana (separate ticket), get off at the last stop (Sorrento, about 1hour 15 minutes), and take a taxi or bus or rental car to Ravello. I don't know if this is faster than the Rome to Salerno route, but connections are frequent, and I prefer not to travel south in order to backtrack north again.
All the above suggestions work, but without a doubt the most fun way to make this trip is to take the train to Salerno, then catch a ferry or hydrofoil from Salerno to Amalfi. This will let you see the spectacular Amalfi coast from the water. From Amalfi it's only a 25-minute local bus ride up the hill to Ravello. In Salerno, it's only a short walk from the train station to the ferry dock. Ferry info: www.coopsantandrea.com Hydrofoil info: www.alicost.it Note that the ferry & the hydrofoil depart from different docks. Also, the schedule next June may differ from that currently shown on the websites. I wouldn't drive. You'll have absolutely no need for a car in Ravello, and the rest of the area is easily visited by bus or ferry. Why rent a car that's going to sit unused for 5 days?
Gina, If you haven't purchased your airline tickets yet, would suggest flying into Naples (NAP) and out of Venice (VCR) From the Naples airport take the Alibus to the Port, and take the Ferry to Amalfi. Bus to Ravello. Or take the Curreri Viaggi bus to Sorrento and the sita bus to Ravello
See Rome on your way to Venice
Thank you for all the great advice. Since we have our flights already I think we will take the train to Sorento and do the ferry. Also, any recommendations for day trips that our family would enjoy during our stay in Ravello?
Gina, You might consider a day trip to Amalfi. Check the Guidebook for information on sightseeing attractions there.
You can take a high-speed train to Napoli or Salerno, rent a car and drive between either city and Ravello. With free parking at your hotel, this is what I consider the best option.
