Travel to Berchtesgaden from Salzburg

Hi We will be checking out of our hotel in Salzburg, moving on to take a tour Of Eagles Nest, etc, in Berchtesgaden. To do this, we need to take a bus from Salzburg to the tour company in Berchtesgaden. After the tour, we want to move on to Munich. Here are our questions: Do the buses (#840) have room for placing 2 larger suitcases, like on a tour bus? If so, we could then take our luggage, place it in lockers at the Berchtesgaden train station, and then take the train from here to Munich instead of backtracking to Salzburg and then going on to Munich. Is this a good idea? We would be getting out of this tour around 18:00 and would need a late train, then. My German in extremely limited, so going to the train web site is difficult. Any advice you can provide would be appreciated.

Joanne, Which website are you using to research your trip from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden? The http://www.bahn.de/i/view/USA/en/index.shtml website has all the information, and you can choose the language so just change it to English if necessary. The DB website shows numerous Buses on that route, with travel times ranging from 45M to 1H:20M. Departure is from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof and arrival at ZOB/Hbf, Berchtesgaden (I'm not sure what "ZOB" refers to, as my German is very limited also - hopefully Lee or one of the others can clarify that). I've never taken Bus 840, but larger luggage items will probably go in the hold under the Bus. I'm not sure if there's a "Left Luggage" facility at Berchtesgaden Hbf. Hopefully one of the others can provide that information. The trip from Berchtesgaden to Munich appears to be about three hours with at least one change, so you won't be arriving in Munich until late. If you're able to connect with an 18:20 departure, you'll arrive at 21:42. Happy travels!

According to the Bayern-Takt website, there are coin lockers (Schließfächer) at the Berchtesgaden Hbf. I doubt if there is left luggage in the Berchtesgaden Hbf. I've been on the Watzmann Express (RVO 840), but I only had an 11#, sub-carry-on bag which I took with me on the bus, so I don't know if they have under-bus storage for large luggage. There is also a rail connection between Salzburg and Berchtesgaden. Often it involves a change of trains in Freilassing, which also has coin lockers. The 18:20 connection between Berchtesgaden and Munich has a 45 min stopover in Freilassing. If you went to Freilassing by train in the morning, left your luggage in a locker, then went on to Berchtesgaden, you could pick it up on your way to Munich. You can find schedules on the German Rail (Bahn) website, in English. The train from Freilassing to Berchtesgaden runs about hourly, but there are more frequent trains from Salzburg to Freilassing, so you could take an earlier train from Salzburg and have time to leave your luggage in Freilassing before heading on to Berchtesgaden.

Yes there is room for the large suitcases on the bus as there is a big open area for handicapped facility like a wheelchair. So it's a very big wide open space. Of course, if there is a wheel chair there then you'll be out of luck.

Ken, ZOB is the central bus station (Zentrale Omnibus Bahnhof, I believe). In Berchtesgaden, it is out in front of the main train station (Hauptbahnhof).
