I am ttraveling fro Rome to Sorrento & am uncomfortable traveling on the train through Naples. Can you suggest alternate travel possibilities ( water jet; private taxi.
IF you're concerned about The Thieves...don't be. I just rode this stretch of track several times last fall, and not until I returned home did I even think about those concerns. It's going to be crowded, though. I can't help with that :-( I don't even want to think about the cost for a private driver. If possible, buy your train tickets b/n Rome and Naples online waaay ahead of time for significant savings!
We always use a private transfer service from Naples to Sorrento. Not because of security worries but because of the convenience. Most times, if we went by train, we would also need to take a taxi from the rail station in Sorrento to our lodging and they are mega expensive. So overall the door to door service suits us. Your target price should be about 75 euro give or take. The journey takes about an hour. Here are some companies who will give you quotes www.gianpierofiorentino.com www.johnnystourservice.com www.amalfi-drive.com www.autoservizidemartino.com http://www.sorrentocars.com/
I agree with Eileen. Taking a taxi from Rome to Sorrento will be very expensive. We've taken the train from Rome to Naples, then walked downstairs to the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento many times without even the hint of trouble. Just hold onto your stuff at all times in the Naples train station. We've had a private driver pick us up at the airport in Naples and drive us to Sorrento but that was for convenience when we knew we'd be jet-lagged. Another time from hotel in Sorrento to Naples train station because we had to leave very early and wanted it to be super easy. We actually enjoy the Circumvesuviana, it's a real slice of real Italian life. Wasn't scary at all.
The Circumvesuviana is pure crap (worse than Metrolink in LA), but the high-speed rail to Napoli is very modern (tracks and trains). You can go to Napoli Centrale and take a private transfer from there. When I say "crap" I refer to the fact it is filthy, full of graffiti, and old (not in the heritage railway sense, but on the 'it's outdated and should be replaced by new' one). This being said, Napoli is no war zone. You will not have to go through any rough area (like a tourist to LA transfering to San Diego wouldn't have to worry about South LA Mexican gangs etc.)
Augie, Could you clarify why you're "uncomfortable" travelling by train through Naples? The EuroStar Italia / Alta Velocita trains that run from Rome to Naples are very clean and modern, so you shouldn't have any problems with that. You basically have three choices: > Hire a private car service to take you from Naples to Sorrento. One of the previous replies listed a number of choices. > Take the Circumvesuviana from Napoli Centrale to Sorrento. I agree with the previous comment that the trains appear old and in many cases they are covered with Graffiti, but I don't agree that they are "crap". It's a commuter train and thousands of people travel on it every day. It looks like an old "clunker" but is cheap and reliable. Note that there are several lines, so be sure to use the one to Sorrento. > Take the Curreri or Marozzi Bus from Roma Tiburtina to Sorrento. There are fewer departures than by train, so you'll have to adjust your travel schedule accordingly. You can reach Roma Tiburtina from Roma Termini via Metro ("B" line, direction Rebibbia, 4th stop I believe). Which option to choose will depend on your budget and time frame. If you have a large and generous travel budget, hire a car from Naples to Sorrento. If you want a more cost-effective solution, travel by ES/AV and the Circumvesuviana. If you don't mind a slightly longer trip, take the Bus. Happy travels!
During the high season a fourth option would be to take a hydrofoil from Naples to Sorrento.
if you're concerned you can take a first class train from rome to naples it's very safe. once you get to naples you can take a cap from the train station to the hydro dock. the dock is across street from the new castle - good view of the city from the castle. the hydro drops you in sorrento and there is a bus take you up the hill to town, so the whole trip you don't have to worry about pickpocketing and thieves. actually, naples is a very cool place. plenty stuff to see, people are so warm, the streets are different but not that bad.
