Travel options from Bath to Stonehenge

Hi! I've been searching for the best, affordable options to have a day trip to Stonehenge this spring (early). We have 4 adults. I'm thinking an uber might be the best bet. Grabbing a train or bus might be an option but it looks like it will still be a bit of a walk to get to the actual site. We have someone in our group that needs to keep walking to a minimum but desperately wants to see Stonehenge! :)
I was wondering if anyone has an idea of the cost of an uber/taxi from Bath to Stonehenge? I really just want an estimate and would like one without logging into Uber itself or any other website where I have to give my information. OR any other suggestions? We are trying to be mindful of cost. Thank you in advance for any ideas!!

It would take longer than a taxi but there is public transport available. You'd take the train from Bath to Salisbury. At the Salisbury Station you can use the local shuttle out to the stones run by the local bus company the Salisbury Reds. They call it the "Stonehenge Tour" but it's really not a "tour" in my mind although it does have a DVD with narration on the way out to Stonehenge.

There is also a tour company in Bath called Mad Max tours. I've done their Stonehenge tour and it was very good but it is combined with other locations and is a full day.

My son and I visited Stonehenge on a daytrip from Bath by taking the train to Salisbury (about 1 hour) and then renting bikes to ride the 9 miles from there. But of course with a member of your group, that is not an option.

The London Toolkit recommends the tour bus run by The Stonehenge Tour, which turns out to be the same as the Salisbury Reds tour bus suggested above. If you go to their website, they will take you to the Stonehenge Tour website to purchase tickets.

The “tour” (actually a sort of hop-on, hop-off bus circuit, is £18.50 per person, so with 4 of you it might be more cost effective to hire a taxi at the Salisbury station.

We also did Mad Max and glad we did. We enjoyed the other stops on the combined tour (Avebury and some Cotswold villages) more than Stonehenge. If they're sold out, ask them for competitors' names. A couple of other companies less well known were also offering.

We did the Mad Max after hours tour and it was amazing! After a couple other stops you get to stonehenge after it's closed to the public and are allowed to walk around the stones. They don't offer it every day, but it's worth checking out.

We took the train to Salisbury, then caught The Stonehenge Tour bus, which as mentioned by others is really just the transportation bus and commentary on the way to Stonehenge. It dropped you off as close as you could get the Stone Circle, which would still going to require a little bit of walking. The circle around would be quite a walk for someone with limited mobility. It's been quite some time since we were there (around 2014) and as I recall they were just completing a new visitors center which was a short driving distance from Stonehenge. So I wonder if now, there is only parking at the visitor center, and then you shuttle or walk to the site from there? Google maps shows a bus carpark and auto carpark at the visitors center, but years ago everyone pulled up quite close the the stone circle for parking, and I remember them saying that was going away. Definitely worth reaching out to the visitors center to confirm what that situation is?

I would make every effort to get that someone in your group to the site. If there is an option to use a walker that may have a seat on it, or a small wheelchair rental in Bath, I would make it happen because the walk around the stone circle (not the right up to it special tours), but the wider pathway circle around the stones is part of the wonder of it all, rather than just gazing at it from one perspective.

I just chose a random date in February on the uber app and it showed 94 euro for regular uber, and 136 euro for executive uber for one way. Of course rates change depending on time, and demand.

Yes, the coach/bus drops you at the car park. You walk to the Visitor Center, buy your ticket if you didn’t get the bus combo ticket and then board a small land train to go the short distance to the stones.

Thank you so much for all of your advice and guidance! I think we are going to try to book a tour with Mad Max. It seems like the best offer when considering the extra stops included that we wouldn't take if we took an uber or any other direct transportation.

Thank you again and I have to say that this forum is incredible for quick and extremely helpful information! :)

I'm glad you decided on the Mad Max tour. Do book as soon as you know your dates. BTW, any of their tours are excellent. The driver/guides are very knowledgeable and interesting.

We did this Mad Max tour in 2022 and really enjoyed it and felt like it was so much better than dealing with the logistics of getting ourselves from Bath. They gave plenty of time at Stonehenge to wander around the stones and to see the wonderful exhibits in the visitors center. There was free time at the 3 other main stops as well, plus a couple of places where we stopped for photo opportunities. I will be taking it again later this year with my daughter.

If your time is limited you've also got the option of Scarper Tours - they only do 4 hour tours of Stonehenge from Bath. Their vehicles are similar to those of Mad Max but obviously do not have as many options. We definitely liked our Mad Max tours best but Scarper was great when we only had a half day available for a return visit. https://www.scarpertours.com/
