I made a post on both "To the North" and "To the Boot" regarding a question about travel between Scandinavia and the Mediterranean coast (Barcelona and Naples). My idea on a repositioning cruise didn't get anywhere. Now it looks like either flying or several trains is/are our only option(s). We will either travel in the spring or the autumn of 2014. The northern destination is Copenhagen or Oslo, the southern destination(s) is/are Barcelona and the Penisola Sorrentina (Pompeii-Amalfi-Paestum). We would like a few days in the Bremen-Oldenburg region of Germany to continue genealogy research), but otherwise our goal is to get from north to south (or vice versa) as comfortable and inexpensively as possible. I would appreciate comments on travel modes to accomplish this. We're not adverse to night trains so long as we can book a "deluxe" compartment (private WC and shower). Thoughts please.
I think you have the options for north to south. We're talking about a 3 hour flight versus more than 36 hours on a train. There is no question for me. I would fly. Just to give you an example, there are direct flights in September from Oslo to Barcelona or from Copenhagen to Rome in the $100 to $200 range.
You could take the ferry over to Rostock, pick up a rental car to visit Bremen and Oldenburg, and then fly. One option I found was flights on Easyjet to Rome from Hamburg. Prices start at 49 euro. There likely are other possibilities to get to Barcelona as well.
