Travel Italy to Greek Islands

My husband and I are travelling mid September down through Italy to Naples or thereabouts and plan to go from there to the Greek Islands (likely Mykonos and Santorini). Any suggestions on how to get from one to the other fastest, cheapest, most interesting?

When we were there last Oct all connections were through Athens. Most interesting would be fly to Athens and boat to Santorini or Mykonos.
