Travel insurance offered through Delta Allianz

Typically we have traveled without trip insurance, but wondering if anyone has had experience with buying an Allianz Global policy for $260 and having it be a wise investment. The offer is associated with our Delta flight to Barcelona? It says it covers all flights and passengers. Is there such a thing as a policy that covers basic big ticket items, like a flight or serious accident or illness for a couple hundred dollars?

Yes. I prefer to purchase my travel insurance directly from Allianz rather than the airline so I can get the coverage level I want. Luckily, I haven’t had to file a claim. I consider it money well spent for the peace of mind in case I or a family member gets sick or injured. It also can cover things like needing to cancel your trip due to job loss.

I buy an annual Allianz AllTrips Premier policy direct from Allianz to cover two trips in a policy year (not calendar year). I also buy an annual Medjet evacuation policy and spend the extra money to buy refundable plane tickets (United). The insurance is to cover prepaid non-refundable or cancellable costs and medical.
You can look at Allianz’s website for coverage and cost. Also look at insuremytrip.com for other companies. There are lots of threads here about travel insurance. Go to “search” for “insurance” then chose “forum” and “6 months”.

Defintely get travel insurance for your trip. Ours was part of the amount in the cruise cost with the travel company. On day one I became very ill and spent 6 days in a Paris hospital. That obviously was the end of the vacation. It did take a few weeks for Allinaz to settle our claim but eventually it was resolved. My husband kept every receipt such as taxi fares, hotel and meds.

We used Allianz for our trip on Delta that was scheduled for October. My husband had a medical issue the day before our flight and we were advised by the doctor it was unwise for him to fly so we cancelled our flight. Allianz asked for a couple of pieces of documentation and quickly paid us for the cost of the flights. We were very glad to have bought the insurance and will definitely do it again for pricey tickets.

I purchased a bare bones policy for my son and daughter-in-law for a trip we were taking to Germany from Allianz directly. They would have had no health coverage while we were there and I am a very risk averse person. Accidents can happen to anyone, anywhere. Anyway. the total cost for the two of them was less than $100. I didn't end up needing the medical coverage, but we did have a claim for trip delay that was over 3 times the cost of the policy. Allianz paid out without hassle.

You may want to check what coverage that you already have. Some people find that they have good credit card coverage such as that provided by Chase Sapphire Reserve. That is what I use for myself. Then, I supplement it with Medjet evacuation coverage. My regular Medicare Advantage plan already covers me for urgent and emergency care worldwide.

Each person has a different threshold for what he/she is willing to self-insure. When you travel without travel insurance you are deciding that you can cover any unexpected costs from available resources.
