I purchased a bare bones policy for my son and daughter-in-law for a trip we were taking to Germany from Allianz directly. They would have had no health coverage while we were there and I am a very risk averse person. Accidents can happen to anyone, anywhere. Anyway. the total cost for the two of them was less than $100. I didn't end up needing the medical coverage, but we did have a claim for trip delay that was over 3 times the cost of the policy. Allianz paid out without hassle.
You may want to check what coverage that you already have. Some people find that they have good credit card coverage such as that provided by Chase Sapphire Reserve. That is what I use for myself. Then, I supplement it with Medjet evacuation coverage. My regular Medicare Advantage plan already covers me for urgent and emergency care worldwide.
Each person has a different threshold for what he/she is willing to self-insure. When you travel without travel insurance you are deciding that you can cover any unexpected costs from available resources.
