Has anyone travled between Bilbao and Santander by car? If so, is the road safe to drive? I heard there are no high speed trains on this route. Comments/suggestions? Thanks!

If you're talking about the E-70, it's a limited access freeway - - nothing unsafe about it. The drive is boring as heck, but you're done with it in about an hour. I'm not sure about trains, but I'd bet you'd have to go down to either Palencia or Burgos and then back up - - it'd take seven evers. What's the basis for the question, anyway? Santander isn't a big attraction. You don't mean San Sebastian, do you? It's now all freeway as well, but the old coastal road was a real adventure.
