Travel in London on Boxing Day

We will be flying from Frankfurt to London City Airport on December 26th. I understand that transportation is limited on that day (Boxing Day). Does anyone know if the tubes will be running? We will need to take the DLR to the Tower Gateway and then transfer to the Tower Hill station to catch the yellow line to King's Cross/St.Pancras station. Thanks in advance.

Usually on Boxing Day buses and tube will be running but not mainline rail. You should be OK on the DLR and the Underground unless there is engineering work.

I haven't seen any advance publicity for this year's holiday running. In past years on Boxing Day there has been some Underground service, often following a limited service, often less on the DLR. From 2010's archives you can have a squint at http://www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/media/newscentre/archive/17740.aspx The "yellow" line is the Circle Line. You can look at projected Engineering Work on the system at http://www.tfl.gov.uk/livetravelnews/planned-works/calendar/default.aspx If you scroll far to the right you will see that the only day between Christmas and New Year that the Circle Line is scheduled to operate is Boxing Day. Experienced as I am with the Engineering Works on London Underground, I would check back closer to the day to be sure that they still expect to run the Circle Line for that one day. You'll have to wait for info about the DLR, but if it were me I might have a contingency plan up my sleeve. Are you sure that the train you will connect to is running? Unless it is Eurostar (if so, why fly from Germany) most trains won't be running on Boxing Day. Then again, as Philip lives there and I only pop in most days he may have it better than me.

The advance planner looks as if it's the western side of the Circle that's closed over the Christmas period, so you should still be able to get to Kings Cross from Tower Hill by taking a District train to Aldgate East and a Hammersmith & City back to Kings Cross. The future closures document at http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/livetravelnews/realtime/tube/track-closures.pdf suggests that the DLR will be running from City Airport to Tower Gateway. To follow from Nigel, are you hoping to get a train from Kings Cross or St Pancras? The national lines probably won't run on Boxing Day, don't know about Eurostar.

I've now checked and there are definitely no domestic trains from either Kings Cross or St Pancras on Boxing Day. Eurostar is running.

Thank you for taking the time to check on this for me. We will be staying at a hotel in the area of St. Pancras so we won't have to worry about further train connections.

Bad news: one of the two Tube unions, ASLEF, is threatening a strike on Boxing Day due to a long term dispute about pay rates on that date. The strike occurred the last two Boxing Days as well, but I'm afraid I don't usually travel that day and don't know how much effect it had.

Phillip:
Thank you for that update. We may have to take a taxi. Do you have any idea how much that may cost? I understand taxi's can be very expensive.
