My wife and I will be driving thru southern Italy--avoiding any large cities. The trip will be the week of October 13th-18th. We'd like to do it without advance reservations for lodging. As this is our first time in Italy-- would we be making a mistake??

Bcuz of the time of year, you should be fine. We have traveled in Italy and many other Eurocountries and seldom had reserved a place, tho lately have done more reserving by internet a day or 2 in advance
