I will be traveling by train from Zermatt to Venice Italy in early June. I thought it best to take a train to the Lake Maggiore area and stay over night to break the trip up. My question is For ease of train itinerary planning, where is the most desirable place to break the trip up in that region? Should we stop in Stresa, Lucarno? Or some other city that would be the most direct less trains, but still leave me and my family in a location( lake maggiore area ) where we can enjoy the location spend the night then get on the train easily the next day in route to Venice? Any help is most appreciated.
Carmen, Stresa would be the most logical choice, as it's an easy one hour trip from there to Milan and then only a few hours more to Venice. It's a very beautiful city and if you have time you could tour one of the Borromeo Islands, perhaps Isola Bella. Locarno is also beautiful but it's a bit off the beaten track for the route you're considering, so wouldn't be as easy for connecting to Venice. Happy travels!
Carmen ,if you do take a break and stop over in Stresa ,you might want to consider adding in at least a full day there . We made this trip ( Venice - Milan - Stresa , and on to Switzerland last fall ( reverse order ) and spent two days in Stresa . We wished we had added another day . The place is extremely seductive and Isola Bella is a corner of heaven on earth . The formal gardens are a knockout . Do your best to linger there for a while .
