travel from Vis Croatia to Rome, Venice, France with group +kids

There is a group of us (7 adults +2 kids) going to Croatia for wedding. After wedding we are going to Vis Island. From there we would like to go to Rome and work the way up to Venice. What do you recommend for crossing over to Italy? Rent a car and drive or ferry and trains? What would be easier and gives the most for the $$?
