This February, I'd like to visit the Verdun Battlefield before heading to Burges. Any suggestions on how to get the Burges. Looks complicated and time consuming. I'd like to take the train.Suggestions? I will be visiting SW Germany, including Colmar the end of March, if that helps. Thanks
Where are you coming from? Burges is easily accessible via train from Antwerp and/or Brussels.
I'll be coming from the south. I will definitely be in Sarlat, south of Paris. I'm thinking about not going to Paris and heading close to Verdun. I was thinking I may need to rent a car to tour the battlefield and return it to Reims.
Thanks,
Frank
Just to make sure we're on the same page, you are talking about Bruges or Brugge in Belgium. Since all efficient timetables backtrack you to Paris, and you think you'll need a car, why not just drop it at Lille station and continue by easy rail connection through Brussels or Ghent.
Thanks. Sounds like I'm getting closer to a plan. Where is Lily Station?
To answer your other question. Yes, I meant Bruges.
Lille is a French industrial city on the border with Belgium, thus there is no foreign country drop charge for a car rented elsewhere in France. It has a large high speed train station (Lille Europe) for trains running between Brussels, London, and Paris. There is also an older station (Lille Flandres) that handles regional trains about 500 yds away. This station has fast inexpensive trains to Bruges (1 hr 20 min), 4 a day are direct, the rest (about 2 every hour) require a single connection along the line. There is a Hertz and Sixt Rental Car location right by Lille Flandres station. Remember, a lot of rental locations in France are closed on Sunday.
This is great information. Thanks a lot!
This isn't about getting to Bruges, but if you go and you are interested in War sites, the Quasimodo Tour Company there does a great tour of the area.
