I am meeting the ETBD tour that starts in Ljubljana after spending a couple of days in Venice. When I booked my plane tickets last fall, the EC61 Casonova train left in the afternoon and arrived early evening. As of April 12, this train no longer runs in Italy. There is a night train that gets into Ljubljana at 2 AM. Is there another way to get from Venice to Ljubljana? Air fare is over 550 Euros, one way, so that's out.
You might look at attacking the route from a different perspective. First, look at the run from Venice to Trieste. It's a 2hr. run on a regional train. And, it costs 12E-13.5E. Except for Trieste being the last stop, the run is identical to the route taken by the night train. There are several runs during the day.
Next, take the train from Trieste to Ljubljana. There are several runs during the day. I suggest that you look at the 16:21 run. It's a bit later in the day but it's the only run I see that doesn't require a change to a bus for a 40-minute ride from Gorizia Centrale to Nova Gorica. Also, it's about 2hrs shorter than the other runs.
I'm using both www.trenitalia.com and www.bahn.de to see this solution. Best of luck.
Jane, I have the same situation. Here is the option that I am planning to do:
Venice to Villach depart 15:44 arrive 17:40
Villach to Ljubljana depart 18:04 arrive 19:48
Tickets were showing at about $90 at Rail Europe.
