I am going to Stuttgart to visit my son from Aug 28-Sept 3, at which point he will be deployed. My return to US is Sept 9 and I am looking for advice on how to best spend Sept. 4-9. Is a trip to Lake Como feasible? Thanks for your input. Mary Lou
Hi,
First off my best wishes for your son and am thankful for his service.
A trip to Lake Como is certainly feasible but be careful about how you get there. Budget airlines will get you from Stuttgart to Milan easier, cheaper, and faster than paying a fortune for a train at that distance, especially since you have to go through Switzerland, and probably change in Zurich. Book early, that's the key! It shouldn't be more than $100-150 each way, probably less. From Milan buy a train ticket up to the lake district, about one hour north. Varenna is a great place to stay, or Mennaggio. The actual Lake Como town is nice to visit but it's expensive to stay, look elsewhere and day tripo to other towns via the ferry system.

Have a grea trip,

If you book far enough in advance (up to 90 days allowed) at www.bahn.de, you can get a Europa-Spezial Italien fare of €39 for Stuttgart-Como S. Giovanni (one change in Zuerich). Click on the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner for English. After you get summary timetables, look at the Savings fare column on the far right and click on "Check availability." Return to the summary timetables and click on "Details for all" to see the connecting points.
Thank you, Jason. Actually, I am now realizing that a side trip to Lake Como is pretty far afield from Stuttgart. Is there any side trip you might suggest that is closer to Stuttgart, from which I will fly back to the US on Sept 9? Appreciate your feedback.
Mary Lou
There are some beautiful mountain areas not far to the south of Stuttgart and accessible by train. Rick suggests Fussen as a good base. It's about 5 hours from Stuttgart and there is an advance fare of E29.
