travel from scotland to wales

I want to spend 2 days in scotland and then maybe take a train to wales for a couple of days and then to Dublin. Is this a good route to go?

Greetings

It is NOT that expensive to travel in the UK by train - in fact it's cheaper than many Amtrak fares. You just need to buy ahead of time to take advantage of Apex fares and buy a ticket for a specific train. I've done the Edinburgh to London round-trip for under £50, albeit with a student discount.

However, you are probably best to fly to Dublin from Scotland and then perhaps back to Cardiff or a city in England near to Wales. Otherwise you are backtracking and there aren't many airports in Wales (Cardiff?). There are also ferries.

BUT be careful of so-called 'discount' airlines. Make sure you factor in all the fees - you often have to pay for each piece of checked luggage and to check-in in person, which you must do to check luggage. Additionally, RyanAir and EasyJet have much lower checked and carry on luggage weight limits so what you can take free on the US-UK flight won't be free on those airlines.

AerLingus often has the best rates when you factor in all the fees.

Need some more info, such as, how long do you have altogether? Is Dublin where you will be flying back to the US from?

It is really expensive to travel by train in the UK unless you manage to hit those few days when the rates are discounted. Also, this would not be a really direct trip and could take you a rather long time. Have you checked the lowcost airlines?

If Dublin is not your debarkation point from Europe, you might get creative and take a ferry from Scot to Ire and then Ire to Wales. That would cover two overnights. You have lots of options, but you need to do some investigating to find out what is best for your trip and budget.

Thanks for the advice. The last two years we have been to Ireland. First year 2 weeks and the second year for 3 weeks. This time we are going for a month. We want to spend some time in Scotland and Wales because our ancestry is from Wales to Ireland. Would it be better to rent or lease a car for the month? Thanks, Dean
