Travel from Salzberg to Ferrara

The first leg of our trip has been settled on, so now it's time for the second leg. We'll need to get from Salzberg to Ferrara (Italy). From what I've found thus far, we can take three trains (Salzberg-Villach-Venezia-Ferrara) or two trains and one plane (train: Salzberg-Vienna, plane: Vienna-Venezia, train: Venezia-Ferrara). The costs are about the same, but I am leaning toward the all-train option (less hassle). The time between trains in Venezia is 17 minutes. Would this be enough time to figure out where the next train is, validate tickets, etc.?

Thanks for any ideas! I'm unfamiliar with the Venezia train station, and am not sure what I would be getting myself into.

Is that Venezia Mestre? 17 min should be barely adequate if the train is on time. You have to get off one train (sometimes behind a big line of other people with luggage), get your luggage off the train, check for the location of your next train, get to that platform which can involve a substantial hike (sprint), etc. If your train to Venezia is late, you can try sprinting to the next train, but it is probably better and safer to just take a later train. I suggest you check train schedules for the Venezia-Ferrara leg of your trip and see if there is a later train you can take as a backup for your present plan. I've traveled in Italy and I don't rely on the trains keeping exactly to schedule.
