Hello,
I am going on a cruise and stopping for one day in Salerno. We'd like to take a train or bus to Pompeii, and then head back and explore Salerno. Has any one done this on their own? Is it hard to find the train/bus station from the port? I can't find much online, any help would be appreciated!
It depends on how much off-ship time you have. Salerno-Pompei trains require about 30-45 minutes, each way. Plus a 15-20-minute walk (or taxi) from the Pompei train station to the Scavi entrance. You'll need at least 3 hours to see the impressive Roman city, with a guide if you can afford it, or your own map and guidebook. Not much to see in Salerno proper, so no big loss there. Salerno is small and from wherever the ship anchors, you'll be close to the train station, by city bus or taxi. Check the Trenitalia.com website for train info, both ways. You can buy return train tickets at the station -- Pompei, andata e ritorno -- since regional trains in Italy can't be booked in advance. Just validate tickets before boarding. Enjoy!
