Travel from Prague to Munich

Renting a car is prohibitive as the drop off fee is so high. Any suggestions so we can see the sights along the way?
Thank you

Take a train. But what "sights" do you want to see? If it is on the train route, you can use local trains and hop on and off, because Czech tickets are pretty cheap. In Germany, you can buy a Bayern ticket and hop on and off regional trains until 3 am the next day.

What sights did you have in mind exactly?

For €30 - €40 each you can very likely purchase train tickets from Prague to Munich at the DB website. You can schedule a stopover in places on the way if you like. Regensburg has a medieval old-town with UNESCO World Heritage status that lies on the train route. It's probably the most noteworthy place in between. Here's a random schedule for you I just pulled up.

Depart Prague 9:33
Arrive Regensburg 13:45. Stow bags in a locker and see the town.

Depart Regensburg 17:53 (ALX train - a regional train)
Arrive Munich 19:17

The Saver Fare for the date I checked is €38.

Because the second train is a regional train you don't have to follow the schedule you book for that train - If you want to hang out in Regensburg longer, you can take ANY regional train to Munich later - as long as it's a regional train.

Try the schedule with stopover thing yourself for your specific travel date. Once the stopover is entered, you can hit "change" and de-select the IC, ICE, EC trains under "connections" so that only regional trains are revealed for the onward journey to Munich.

Hi,

If your trip is after May 31, there is a direct train from Prague to Munich. If you intend on seeing towns/villages along the way, then take the regional train. I would suggest Cheb, (right across the border formerly known as Egerland in the Sudetenland, the city of Pilsen, where the "American Memorial" to 1945 is located,

Cheb is not on the direct line from Prague to Munich. Nontheless, it would be well worth the detour. Alternatively, you could see the Belle Epoque spa of Marianske Lazne, halfways between Plzen and Cheb. In Bavaria, the main attractions are Regensburg, as said above, and Landshut, which are on the direct line. The direct ALX train from Prague to Munich stops in both towns (every other hour). I'd buy a Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket which is good for any regional train between Plzen and the Bavarian border (including the ALX) and throughout Bavaria. So you can do intermediate stops at will (there are numerous trains between Regensburg / Landshut and Munich) ore even some zigzagging. That ticket is available either online (www.bahn.com) or at the office of the Student Agency (operator of Regiojet and Leo express) in the main station of Prague (Praha hlavní nádraží). For the Prague to Plzen leg buy regular tickets on the spot (approx. €4 each).
