My husband and I are visiting our son who is studying in Prague. We have 4 days in Prague and 5 days to travel elsewhere. We want to go to Vienna and Salzburg with a stop in Cesky Krumlov. Is that too ambitious? My plan was to rent a car in Prague, drive to CK , Salzburg and on to Vienna and take a train back from Vienna to Prague to get him back to school. Or should we just go to CK and Vienna? Also are transports better that renting a car. Budget does not seem to mind a car drop off in a different city or am I missing something?
Thank you for any help. I am overwhelmed by all the information out there.
Your planned travel is fine. My comment is that dropping a car in a different country (as opposed to city) adds on unbelievable additional charges. Bus and train tickets between these places are very cheap.
Have you considered getting on the train and going down to Plzen? Visit the brewery. Roam around the old town. Eat some excellent food. It is all economical as is the hotel we stayed in.
Thank you. Yes I was thinking about going for a day trip to Pilsen from Prague on our last full day. I want to see the Patton Memorial.
Hi, Good idea to go Pilsen. I don't know about the Patton Memorial, but in 2001 I went to Pilsen from Nürnberg by train to see the American Monument dedicated to the troops of the Third Army (Patton) for the liberation of Pilsen. It was about 25 mins walk up from the train station. Are we talking of the same thing?
I'd agree that the car rental drop off fees are considerably higher (especially in Europe) for different drop/pick-up locations. Trains are the way to go. I would also like to add that Prague to Salzburg is a REALLY long train adventure on some really old Czech trains (at least my experience). I'm not saying you should do it but you'll eat up some time traveling. T
