Travel from Paris to Salzburg

We want to spend 3 days in Paris and then travel to Salzburg but are not sure the best/easiest way to get there. Is there a train into Austria we can take from Paris? Flying is quite expensive and takes hours with the layovers.

Late August I took a train from Innsbruck to Paris in one day, so I know it can be done in the reverse direction. From Paris to Salzburg is a long way.

You can take the TGV to Zurich, then onwards to Innsbruck and Salzburg. But as for price, I would be surprised if taking the train was cheaper. And it will not be quicker. I think it would be 8 to 10 hours to get from Paris to Salzburg, and without discount tickets, 100 euros by train.

If you book well in advance (up to 90 days allowed) at www.bahn.de, you can get a Europa-Spezial Frankreich fare as low as €39 for Paris-Salzburg. One of your route choices would be to leave Paris at 07:24, change trains in Stuttgart, and arrive in Salzburg at 16:04.

Even though in my first post I only referred to daytime routes, I'll echo Steve's endorsement of the CNL train from Paris to Munich. The compartments in 6-bunk and 4-bunk couchettes are the same size. Spend a little more for more elbow room and more luggage space. Or spring for a 2-bed sleeper.

According to bahn.de, the advance purchase discount fare for the Munich-Salzburg railjet is €29, not €39. The standard fare is €33.
